Introduction to the Legislative Process
Participants will gain a better understanding of the North Carolina State Legislature process, timelines, and procedures trough an interactive workshop with state representatives, advocates, and organizers.
Policy Area Breakout Sessions
Participants will have the opportunity dive deeper into specific policy areas and engage with policy experts on social justice issues. Here are some sessions we’ve held in the past: Public Health and Healthcare; Immigration; K-12 Education; Criminal Justice; The Rights of Workers’ and Livable Wages; Environmental Issues
Poverty in North Carolina
This panel will explore the challenges that are caused by and result from poverty in the state of North Carolina and how families and residents are impacted.
How to Advance Change
Students will learn how to advocate for social justice and public policy issues in their own communities.
Equity in Policy
On this panel, experts will discuss the importance of equity in public policy in order to address the needs of every North Carolinian.
Jobs in Public Policy
Students will learn what job opportunities are available in the field of public policy and how to turn them into careers.
Policy Projects
Students will work with colleagues to complete a mini-project on their desired public policy issue.
Activities and Networking
Group Outings
Students will go out into Raleigh to engage in team building and cultural enrichment activities.
Networking Opportunities
Students will network and build relationships with social justice leaders, policy makers, and policy advocates.
Making the Connections
The purpose of this week is to help participants gain a better understanding of the many facets of policy in the state. Each year we partner with organizations across the triangle to help participants make stronger connections to specific examples of the impacts of race and poverty to the policy process in North Carolina.
